China is currently experiencing a rise in respiratory infections, notably human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and rhinovirus, particularly among children under 14 in northern provinces.
HMPV presents symptoms similar to the common cold, such as fever, cough, and runny nose, and can lead to serious respiratory conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia, especially in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Currently, there is no vaccine for HMPV. Health experts advise against the indiscriminate use of antiviral drugs due to potential health risks and the possibility of developing drug resistance.
In response to the increase in respiratory diseases, China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration has initiated a pilot monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin. This system aims to establish procedures for laboratories to report cases and for agencies to verify and manage them efficiently, enhancing preparedness for emerging respiratory diseases.
While the surge in HMPV cases has raised concerns, there is currently no official warning or declared emergency from the Chinese government or the World Health Organization. Health experts attribute the rise in respiratory illnesses to colder weather and the resumption of normal activities post-COVID-19, which has led to increased exposure to common pathogens.
