On December 25, 2024, an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 aircraft operating Flight J2-8243 from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan. The crash resulted in 38 fatalities among the 67 people on board, with 29 survivors, including children, some in critical condition.

Preliminary reports suggest that the aircraft collided with a flock of birds, leading to engine failure and necessitating an emergency landing attempt. The plane was diverted to Aktau due to fog in Grozny. During the emergency landing, the aircraft caught fire and was destroyed.
