Times of India The child, admitted to Bengaluru Baptist Hospital with symptoms of fever and breathlessness, has no travel history, indicating local transmission. The Karnataka Health Department has confirmed the case, though the sample was not tested in their laboratory.
HMPV is a respiratory virus that can cause illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe conditions such as bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically appear 3 to 10 days after infection and may include cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, and breathing difficulties.
In response to this case and reports of HMPV outbreaks in other countries, the Indian Ministry of Health has stated that there is no cause for alarm. The ministry is enhancing surveillance and testing capabilities, with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) set to monitor HMPV trends throughout the year. Hospitals nationwide have been advised to maintain strict isolation protocols for suspected cases and ensure the availability of necessary medications and oxygen support for severe cases.
Preventive measures recommended by health authorities include regular hand washing, avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting respiratory symptoms, and using masks in crowded places. There is currently no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV; management focuses on relieving symptoms and providing supportive care.
